Exams kill interest?
The answer to the above question is yes and no.
No.
Exams prepared well and sat at the right time will greatly boost student's confidence. Some students even requested for exams on their own volition. Other than music literacy and aural skills, teachers should focus at building confidence in order to develop performance skills and musicianship in students.
Yes.
Music exams aren't easy! Lessons focused solely on graded exams are mentally taxing on students and may take the fun out of music learning. High level of concentration is needed during a performance and students need to overcome their anxiety during the exam process. While exams are great for cultivating discipline, too much focus on exams may kill interest!
